Being invited to apply for a skilled visa starts with your expression of interest

Before being invited to apply for a skilled visa you need to complete and submit a free expression of interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. This is the Australian Government online system that lets us know you want to apply for a skilled visa.

The Australian Government issues invitations to apply for skilled visas several times a year, based on the EOIs in SkillSelect.

Through SkillSelect, you can be invited to apply for the following skilled visas:

What you need for your EOI

Before you can complete and submit your EOI you need to:

  • Check your occupation is on the skilled occupation list. Different skills lists apply to different visas.
  • Check you can meet the minimum points score (65) using the points calculator.
  • Get a skills assessment in the occupation you are nominating. A skills assessment is an independent assessment of your skills and qualifications by a relevant assessing authority in Australia. You will need to include the date of the skills assessment, the name of the assessing authority and the reference/receipt number in your EOI.
  • Complete an English language test if required – you will need at least competent English. Additional points are awarded for proficient or superior English skills. You will be asked to include English test details and results in your EOI. (Your partner and any children aged 18 or older you include in your application will need to have at least functional English by the time the visa decision is made.)
  • Include information about your educational qualifications.
  • Provide details of your work experience.

Invitations to apply for a skilled visa

Invitations to apply for a skilled visa are sent to selected individuals in eligible occupations who submit an EOI that meets or exceeds the points criteria.

Points are awarded for factors such as:

  • age
  • work experience
  • educational qualifications
  • English language skills
  • being nominated by a state or territory (subclass 190 and 491 visas) or sponsored by an eligible family member (subclass 491 visa).

If you don’t meet the points score and you have a partner, use the points calculator to see if they will meet or exceed the minimum points threshold. If they do, suggest they submit an EOI as the primary applicant and include you as a family member.
